Kansas City Chiefs have struggled at wide receiver position
The Kansas City Chiefs are once again without a true number one wide receiver heading into the 2017 season. This is nothing new for the Chiefs organization and is becoming a trend that fans are all too familiar with.
When was the last time that the Kansas City Chiefs had multiple good wide receivers on their team? Honestly, you might have to go back to the 90s to find such a time.
In the last ten years, the Chiefs have not been an NFL team known for their talent at the wide receiver position. That’s why when they locked down Jeremy Maclin before the 2015 season, fans were ecstatic! Finally! A number one threat down the field.
Yeah, no. Maclin had one good season and after his poor performance in 2016, was released by the Chiefs with three years left on his contract. If the Chiefs were trying to save money, that’s cool and all, but who is going to play wide receiver now?

This is something that KC Chiefs fans have grown accustom to while rooting for this team. Here have been some of the receivers in Kansas City over the last decade:
- Jeremy Maclin
- Chris Conley
- Albert Wilson
- Dwayne Bowe
- Jonathan Baldwin
- Donnie Avery
- Steve Breaston
- Mark Bradley
That hurts my head just looking at that list. It really does make you think how poor of a job the Chiefs have done with adding decent receivers to their ranks.

They’ve done a nice job with getting some threats to throw to, like Travis Kelce and Tyreek Hill, but the receiver position has been one that just hasn’t seemed to be all that important in Kansas City. Hell, their leading receiver of all-time is a tight end (Tony Gonzalez with 10,940 yards over 11 seasons).
The KC Chiefs aren’t going to scare anyone with Conley, Wilson, and Jehu Chesson taking snaps at wide receiver. Hill is a fast guy, but teams will figure out how to stop him, and once they do, that’s all she wrote for the Kansas City Chiefs offense.
The Chiefs have been so bad at wide receiver that they’ve only had eight guys EVER record more than 1,000 yards in a single season. Meanwhile, Oakland saw their starting receivers (Amari Cooper and Michael Crabtree) go for over 1,000 yards last year.
The difference seems to be in the quarterback, but it’s not Alex Smith‘s fault that the Chiefs have only had eight guys accomplish such a feat. The blame should be placed on the organization for not getting good enough receivers.
When will this trend change? Possibly never, but hopefully soon. The Kansas City Chiefs need a legitimate wide receiver if they want to make it to a Super Bowl any time soon.
