The 2017 NFL Draft is begins in less than a day and Kansas City Chiefs fans think this could be the year in which their favorite team drafts a quarterback in the first round. One of the recent mock drafts has them landing Patrick Mahomes.

EDITOR’S NOTE – This article was written before the Chiefs pulled the trigger and drafted Patrick Mahomes after trading up to the tenth overall pick. Feel free to continue leaving comments calling me an idiot though.

With the draft so close we can all barely contain our excitement, ESPN released their final mock draft before the big event begins. In this mock draft, all of the staff members took turns drafting for their respective teams. Adam Teicher drafted for the KC Chiefs and had them landing Patrick Mahomes out of Texas Tech with the 27th overall pick.

Teicher had this to say,

"The Chiefs haven’t drafted a quarterback in the first round since 1983, so this pick is well overdue. Alex Smith has two seasons left on his contract, giving the Chiefs plenty of time, if they so choose, to develop a quarterback with a lot of potential."

While drafting a quarterback would be new and exciting for Chiefs Kingdom, I still don’t see a scenario in which this ends up happening. For one, the Chiefs just don’t draft quarterbacks early. Second, they have the 27th overall pick in the draft. If they were near the top of the board, I could see them going after a quarterback, but that’s not the case here.

As for Mahomes, I’d love for him to land in Kansas City. He had mind blowing stats while at Texas Tech, throwing for 11,252 yards, 93 touchdowns, and 29 interceptions. He also rushed for 845 yards and 22 touchdowns, which shows that he’s a dual threat quarterback.

As Teicher mentioned, Mahomes would need at least a year before he’d be ready to be a starter in the league. He’d be coming into a great situation in Kansas City, getting to sit and learn behind Alex Smith and then getting the keys to the car when the time is finally right.

While none of the quarterbacks that are mocked as first rounders are really worth taking that high, there will be a run on the position sometime on Thursday night. I honestly think the four big quarterbacks will all be off the board by the time the Kansas City Chiefs are even close to sniffing the clock.

Unless the Chiefs are willing to trade up, which I don’t see them doing, then this fantasy of Patrick Mahomes landing with the KC Chiefs more than likely isn’t going to happen. The good news, however, is that we still have all day Thursday to dream of this potentially becoming a reality.

What do you think, Chiefs Kingdom? Is there any chance that you could see Kansas City drafting Patrick Mahomes or any other quarterback in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft?
