While many people are focused on who they think the Kansas City Chiefs will take in the first round, there is a real possibility the team decides to trade their pick again.

In the 2016 NFL Draft, the Kansas City Chiefs chose to trade out of the first round in a move that added extra fourth and fifth round picks. With all the excitement of such a talented draft class, not many people have focused on that option. However, it could make a lot of sense for the Chiefs to trade back and try to add another middle round pick.

In a draft with so much talent, you want as many picks as you can get, especially in the top 100. As it stands, the Chiefs have three picks in the top 100, but also hold the 104th pick. If John Dorsey could find a trade partner that would give up another third round pick, that could end up being quite a steal.

According to the trade value chart, the Chiefs would have to work out a deal with a team that holds a middle second round pick in order to get that extra third. This year’s draft class is strong enough that I think Kansas City would give serious thought to doing that.

Of course, that would make for a pretty unexciting first round for Chiefs fans. However, in most NFL circles, it would likely be considered pretty shrewd. John Dorsey could build a lot of valuable depth on the roster with the right move.

Other Options On The Table

Another thing to remember is that the Kansas City Chiefs have more assets than just picks to trade. There are some players on the roster who would carry some interesting value on the trade market.

If the Chiefs are willing to trade a player, the biggest name that stands out to me is Dee Ford. The Chiefs have been linked to a number of pass rushers in this year’s draft class. That would make Ford a very tradeable option for them. Coming off of a 10 sack season, there would likely be a few teams willing to bite.

The Kansas City Chiefs are in a very strong position when it comes to the 2017 NFL Draft. The Chiefs draft strategy in the past few years has yielded a pretty strong roster of talent. That provides John Dorsey and his staff with a lot of options to pursue this year. Operating from a position of strength is always desirable.
