The KC Chiefs hold the 27th overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft. While Chiefs Kingdom would love for their team to select a quarterback with that first round pick, history has shown that this isn’t a team who will take that risk.

By this point, all of Chiefs Kingdom is tired of hearing about the 1983 NFL Draft and how it was the last time that the Kansas City Chiefs drafted a quarterback in the first round. The truth is that until the Chiefs buck that trend, that draft is going to continue to be brought up year after year.

While the current core of John Dorsey and Andy Reid shouldn’t be linked with the same crews who avoided picking quarterbacks over the last 30 plus years, they haven’t taken one since being in Kansas City. Instead, the Chiefs have gone with quarterbacks in the fifth round, where they took Aaron Murray in 2014 and Kevin Hogan in 2016.

Fans will be eagerly waiting for the first round to see if the Chiefs go with a signal caller, but I’m not getting my hopes up. For one, John Dorsey has said none of the four main quarterbacks are ready to be thrown into action. That, to me, makes it sound like he’s not willing to go with one of them in the first round.

More from KC Kingdom

If the quarterbacks aren’t ready to contribute to this team right now, then is it worth going for one with the KC Chiefs’ first round pick? Why not add a linebacker or a running back to make sure this team is a legitimate Super Bowl contender in 2017?

I’m still seeing several mock drafts where Deshaun Watson is being linked to Kansas City at pick 27 and I’ve made it pretty clear in several articles on KC Kingdom that there’s no way in hell that’s happening. Watson is the biggest name in this year’s draft and plays at the biggest position in the sport.

The best rumors are the ones that Watson won’t get selected in the first round… Haha, yeah right. If that happens, I’ll wear a Raiders shirt in public. Watson making it out of the top ten picks would shock me, let alone all the way past the first round.

At the end of the day, it’d be cool to see the Kansas City Chiefs buck tradition and go with a signal caller in the first round, but I just don’t see it happening. They’re not that type of team.
