UFC Fight Night In Kansas City: Johnson Vs Reis
By Ben Almquist
The Ultimate Fighting Championship is coming to Kansas City with UFC Fight Night: Johnson Vs Reis. This is hopefully the first of many big events for the MMA giant in KC.
It’s fight night, Kansas City! The Ultimate Fighting Championship has finally brought an MMA event to KC. UFC Fight Night: Johnson Vs Reis features Flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson defending his title against top challenger Wilson Reis. If you’re a fight fan, you know this one is going to be wild.
The well-rounded Demetrious Johnson is the only Flyweight champ in UFC history. He has held the belt since 2012, defending the title nine times. Johnson is noted for his speed, which allows him to attack quickly and get away before his opponent can respond. He is also a solid jiu-jitsu fighter, winning nine fights by submission.
Wilson Reis comes into this UFC Fight Night with a three fight win streak. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt is a seasoned veteran with a long list of opponents. Reis will look to take the fight to the mat where he is most comfortable. He is coming in as a clear underdog to Demetrious Johnson.

There are some other interesting fights on this card. While a UFC Fight Night lineup generally doesn’t carry many top tier fights, they can set up future pay per view bouts. That should be the case in this event.
Michelle Waterson vs. Rose Namajunas (Strawweight)
The women’s division of the UFC is starting to take off, and we’re seeing more and more talented fighters get in the mix. Michelle Waterson is a pretty well-rounded fighter, but shows a preference for working a submission. Her opponent, Rose Namajunas is a bit more enigmatic. Namajunas is just 8 fights into her professional career. The winner of this bout may be in line for a title shot.

Ronaldo Souza vs. Robert Whittaker (Middleweight)
Brazilian jiu-jitsu star Ronaldo Souza will look to secure a title shot by taking out Robert Whittaker. Whittaker is a knockout specialist from Australia who got his start on The Ultimate Fighter. Whittaker is coming in on a six fight win streak. However, Ronaldo Souza has a much more impressive resume.

Jeremy Stephens vs. Renato Carneiro (Featherweight)
There isn’t a lot at stake in this fight from a title picture standpoint. However, this is a great chance for Renato Carneiro to generate some buzz if he can take out a veteran like Jeremy Stephens. Stephens is known for his hard striking, winning 16 fights by knockout. Carneiro is a young fighter, but has a solid grappling background. He’ll need it against Stephens.
Alexander Volkov vs. Roy Nelson (Heavyweight)
Oddly enough, the most anticipated match of this card may be a preliminary fight. Former Bellator champ Alexander Vokov is taking on American fan favorite Roy Nelson. Nelson, known as “Big Country” is a blue collar hero for casual fight fans. At this point in his career, he’s not in line for a title fight…but he should still get a big response from the crowd.
It’s a solid card for the UFC’s debut in Kansas City. Hosting a UFC Fight Night is the first step towards grabbing a pay per view card. Fight fans should be treated to a pretty exciting night, as a couple of these bouts feature interesting match-ups.
