The Kansas City Royals backed into some bad luck last season when Mike Moustakas had to miss the final four months of the season due to an ACL injury. This season, he appears to be back to hitting how he did in 2015.

KC Royals fans didn’t know what to expect from Mike Moustakas this season. He was one of the hottest hitters on the team in 2015, but a shortened 2016 season caused reason for concern for Royals fans.

Here we are though… Only five games into the season and Mike Moustakas is the second best hitter on the team (with Salvador Perez being the best hitter). Moustakas didn’t even play in the team’s fifth game of the season this past Saturday, but was put into the game as a pinch hitter for Christian Colon in the seventh inning.

Moose managed a single to advance Alcides Escobar to second and then Raul Mondesi Jr. was brought in to pinch run.

Before that game though, Moustakas was still slamming baseballs and taking names. He hit a home run in the Royals’ season opener and was the only Royal to score a run in that horrid game. He hit another home run against the Twins in the third game of the series.

Moustakas currently has a .333 batting average heading into the final game of this series against the Astros. His slash line is .333/.368/.667 with two home runs, three runs, and six hits. He’s also drawn one walk and has struck out five times.

I’ll be honest here. I didn’t think that the Kansas City Royals would get this production out of Moustakas this early on in the season. I figured with his ACL injury last season that he’d still be nursing that and wouldn’t be hitting real well. I’m glad to be wrong on that one!

If Mike Moustakas can continue to hit this well, then perhaps there will be a major push from the front office to retain him moving forward. Cheslor Cuthbert has shown that he can hit well and the Royals could easily get some nice pieces in exchange for him.

Right now though, the fan base has calmed down after going 0-3 to start the year and Mike Moustakas has played a huge part in that. If he can continue this type of production at the plate, then the KC Royals not only will be in a prime position to contend for the playoffs, but they’ll also have a major decision on their hands as to if Moose should be let go this offseason.

What do you think, Royals fans? Can Mike Moustakas keep this hot hitting up?
