The Kansas City Royals will begin their 2017 season on Monday at 3:10 central time in Minnesota against the Twins. This more than likely will be the last Opening Day with this current core group of players.

With so many impending free agents hitting the market after this season, Monday’s Opening Day in Minnesota will be a bittersweet one.

Sure, Opening Day marks the beginning of the MLB season, but for these KC Royals, it also marks the end nearing on this team. At the end of the season, no matter what has happened during the course of the year, Lorenzo Cain, Alcides Escobar, Eric Hosmer, and Mike Moustakas could all be gone and on different teams.

If the Royals aren’t in contention by the trade deadline, it’s possible that all four of those guys could be shipped off to other teams in exchange for prospects.

While everyone is excited for Opening Day, it’s still “The beginning of the end” for this era of Royals baseball. The era of Royals baseball that got everyone in Kansas City to believe again is heading into its final push to win a World Series with this core group.

It won’t be easy, as the Royals have the Cleveland Indians to deal with in their division, and other tough teams like the Boston Red Sox and Texas Rangers in their conference. Not to mention if they do make it to the World Series, it could be against the stealthy Chicago Cubs or the surging Los Angeles Dodgers.

Winning another ring won’t be easy, but we’ve seen this current Kansas City Royals team prevail through so much, and if anyone is up to the task, it’s these guys.

Perhaps come season’s end, there will be a solution where the team can keep all four of these impending free agents, but I highly doubt it. Escobar will shortly be gone, as Raul Mondesi Jr. will likely make the switch over to shortstop after this season.

Lorenzo Cain, as good as he’s been for this team, has struggled to stay healthy,  and will be 32 next season.

Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas could come back, but it’ll likely be one or the other.

I’m not trying to bum out Royals fans, but there’s no denying that Opening Day on Monday marks the start of the final tour for our favorite band. This current group of Kansas City Royals need to go out with a bang, and what bigger bang could they make than to win another freakin’ World Series?
