KC Royals: Pair of Royals Help Team USA Win World Baseball Classic
The KC Royals are in the thick of Spring Training at the moment, but Danny Duffy and Eric Hosmer have spent the past few weeks participating in the World Baseball Classic with Team USA, who won it all on Wednesday night.
USA! USA!
That’s right, folks. The U.S. has won their first World Baseball Classic title and they did so with the help of Kansas City Royals starting pitcher Danny Duffy and first baseman Eric Hosmer.
The two took time out of Spring Training to help their country on the diamond. While Duffy only pitched in one game, Hosmer played in seven and collected nine hits, scored five runs, plated five RBI, and stole one base.
Oh, not to mention he had a walk-off home run to send Team USA further into the competition. Yeah, he was clutch.
While not many baseball fans seemed to care about the World Baseball Classic all that much, it was riveting. Close games were always at the helm and despite a few snags here and there, nobody really got injured. That’s the most important thing.
Other members of the KC Royals to compete in the World Baseball Classic were Drew Butera (Team Italy), Alcides Escobar (Team Venezuela), Salvador Perez (Team Venezuela), and Joakim Soria (Team Mexico). Butera and Perez were infamous for colliding at the plate during a game and Royals fans were about to be less than forgiving to Butera if the injury to Salvy had been more serious.
Fortunately, it wasn’t. In fact, Perez was back in action at Spring Training the other day!
Back to the WBC though, this is exciting for America. Lately, everyone in this country has been on pins and needles due to politics and whatnot, so it was nice to have a little distraction from all of that.

Hosmer was elated with the results.
"“We had a goal — to put the U.S.A. on top of the baseball world where it belongs, and we did exactly that,” said first baseman Eric Hosmer, who played on the 2013 team that was eliminated by Puerto Rico. “So we’re proud of the guys. It’s an awesome experience.”-Quote courtesy of Bill Wit of The New York Times"
Not only did Team USA bring home the gold, but they did so in dominating fashion. The red, white, and blue won the final game by a score of 8-0 over Puerto Rico. Yeah, I’d say that was a dominant showing.
It’s always cool to see the U.S. bring home a gold medal in any capacity, but to see two members of the Kansas City Royals contribute to that is even cooler.
Go USA and Go Royals!
