Wichita State Shockers Should Be Higher Than Ten-Seed

The Wichita State Shockers have made it to the NCAA Tournament for the sixth straight year, which is quite the accomplishment. This year, however, the Shockers got hosed in the seedings.

The bracket for the 2017 NCAA Tournament was announced on Sunday evening and Wichita State fans might not be as thrilled about it as some schools are.

Despite a 30-4 record in the regular season and winning the Missouri Valley Conference, the Shockers received a ten-seed in the South region. Their first round opponent will be against Dayton, who is a seven-seed.

The outrage isn’t just with Wichita State fans, as people lashed out on Twitter about the decision to put them as a double digit seed.

The only reason I could see placing WSU so low is that they play in a lesser conference. They’ve owned the Missouri Valley Conference though and have shown that they belong in the NCAA Tournament year after year.

Onto the bracket itself though. The Shockers will open against seven-seeded Dayton, who I feel like they have a good shot at beating, especially now after getting screwed over.

From there, Wichita State will more than likely see Kentucky, who is the two-seed. Think back to the 2013-2014 season when the Wildcats handed WSU their first loss of that season and knocked them out of March Madness. It’d be really funny to see the Shockers get their revenge for that this year.

The number one seed in Wichita State’s region is North Carolina and their chances of getting to face the Tarheels is a fair one. They’d also have to play teams like UCLA or Butler, which could prove to be challenging.

At the end of the day, however, the Wichita State Shockers shouldn’t be entering their sixth straight tournament as a ten-seed. I was honestly thinking they’d be somewhere in the six or seven seedings, but jeez.

Perhaps WSU will opt to schedule tougher non-conference opponents from now on so that something like this doesn’t happen again in the future.

I like the tweet above from Mike Kennedy (the voice of the team). The Shockers will play angry now that they’ve been disrespected and that’s not a team that anyone in the tournament will want to face. I almost feel bad for Dayton because they’re going to be the brunt of that anger come Friday afternoon.

For a smaller Division I school, what the Wichita State Shockers have accomplished under Gregg Marshall has been very impressive. This BS seeding should be a big gut punch to the players and they’ll play hard on Friday.

No better way to prove the mistake than by winning and taking out all of the teams seeded higher than them. Go Shockers!
