K-State basketball is currently led by head coach Bruce Weber, but after a rough second half to the 2016-2017 season, Weber could very well be fired at the end of the season.

Any Kansas State basketball fan that doesn’t think Bruce Weber is on the hot seat right now is lying to themselves. While not everyone agrees with him possibly seeing the door in a few weeks, it might be the right decision for the Wildcats.

Weber, who has spent the last five seasons at the helm for K-State, has been disappointing this year. After a red hot start that saw his Wildcats get off to a 12-1 start, the Cats have faltered down the stretch.

Since that 12-1 start to their 2016-2017 campaign, K-State basketball has gone an abysmal 5-10. That’s not exactly the type of record one wants when trying to get their team into the NCAA Tournament for the first time since the 2013-2014 season.

Ken Corbitt of the Topeka Capital-Journal writes,

"The future of coach Bruce Weber is certainly in doubt after the Wildcats missed the postseason the previous two seasons. With three games left in the regular season, this was a telling outcome for the Wildcats, who haven’t shown the ability to put away teams."

Corbitt’s statement about the final three games is very important. If the Wildcats can sweep those three games and get a bid into the tournament, then I think Bruce Weber will live to see another year as the head coach for the Kansas State Wildcats.

Two of those games will come on the road and the final one will be against a Texas Tech team that stunned the Wildcats in the final seconds of their first match-up back in January.

The truth is that ever since KSU lost to their in-state rival Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse on a controversial no-call walk, this team just hasn’t been the same.

Fans have even appeared to have given up on Weber, calling for his job on Twitter.

When the masses start to turn on you, that’s never a good sign. Bruce Weber needs to get this team back to what they were at the start of the season, but that just might not be in the cards for the Kansas State Wildcats this season.

Perhaps they weren’t ready for the bright lights of actually competing in the Big 12 Conference, but this is a team that looks defeated before the season is even over with. Maybe they’ll prove everyone wrong and advance far in the Big 12 Tournament in Kansas City in two weeks, but will that be enough to save Weber’s job?

This team looks promising at times with Wesley Iwundu averaging 12.9 points per game and Dean Wade always being there to make some sort of play when needed. The issues down the stretch will ultimately fall on Bruce Weber’s shoulders and with five seasons and hardly anything to show for it, he could be on his way out after these last three games.
