The 2017 NFL Draft doesn’t have the big time quarterbacks that past drafts have had, but Mitch Trubisky out of North Carolina is the top prospect in this year’s class. Do the KC Chiefs have any chance to draft him?

Quarterback is a highly scrutinized position in Kansas City, and Chiefs fans have made their opinions of Alex Smith known since he came to the team four years ago. Smith likely isn’t going to be quarterbacking the Chiefs after 2017.

That reason alone is why it’d make sense to draft a gun slinger in this year’s draft and groom him in 2017. Mitch Trubisky is the best quarterback prospect in the 2017 NFL Draft, which means that at pick 27, the Kansas City Chiefs will have little shot at drafting him.

There are a lot of questions surrounding Trubisky as far as his NFL future is concerned. The main one is that he only started for one season while at North Carolina. Trubisky could have benefitted from a second year as a starter for the Tar Heels, but decided to forego it and become a pro one year early.

His junior year at North Carolina, however, was quite impressive. Trubisky threw for 3,748 yards, 30 touchdowns, and only six interceptions. He was also effective with his legs, rushing for 308 yards and five touchdowns.

As mentioned several times already, the chances of the KC Chiefs landing Mitch Trubisky are nearly impossible. Quarterback is the most important position on any NFL team and there are plenty of teams with higher draft picks that will easily scoop up Trubisky before the Chiefs can even think about doing so.

While I don’t see the Tar Heel going number one overall to the Browns, he could wind up with San Francisco (second overall), Chicago (third overall), or the New York Jets (sixth overall). If someone Trubisky slipped past those three teams, the Browns would love to take him with their second pick in round one.

For the sake of this scouting report though, let’s just go into why drafting Mitch Trubisky would be a great move.

Well, first of all, it’d mean the Kansas City Chiefs were drafting a quarterback in the first round of the draft. That hasn’t been done since 1983. I wasn’t even alive when it last happened.

Second, Smith isn’t going to be with the Chiefs for much longer. It’s time to find his successor and Mitch Trubisky would be a great prospect to put into that “franchise quarterback” role. He’s young and showed in his lone season at the helm for the Tar Heels that he can put up impressive stats.

Third, it’d be a flashy pick! The Chiefs tend to draft for depth, which is great, but they’re still just mediocre at the most important position on the team. Alex Smith has taken this team as far as he can. Time to train the next Chiefs quarterback.

If the Chiefs really like Mitch Trubisky, they could decide to trade up, but I don’t see that happening. They’re not the type of team to make big draft day trades like that, especially for a quarterback.

What do you think, Chiefs fans? Is there any chance you see Mitch Trubisky falling to the KC Chiefs in the 2017 NFL Draft?
