KC Royals News: Danny Duffy and Other Impending Free Agents

facebooktwitterreddit

KC Royals news consists of the team signing Danny Duffy to a five-year extension and about the other guys on the team who will hit free agency in 2017. There’s quite a bit of them.

This has been an incredibly busy offseason for the Kansas City Royals with trades occurring and just recently, extensions being offered. The Royals offered a five-year extension worth $65 million to pitcher Danny Duffy and the news was announced earlier this week.

The signing came at the perfect time, as the Chiefs had just lost in heartbreaking fashion in the playoffs. Kansas City needed some good news and they got it with this Duffy extension.

Duffy, a third round pick by the Royals in 2007, saw his first action in MLB in 2011 and has continued to get time in both the rotation and in the bullpen since then. The 2014 season was one of Duffy’s best, as he pitched his way to a 2.53 ERA, but struggled with injuries.

This past season was when Royals fans really saw what Duffy had to offer when he started 26 games and had a 3.51 ERA in 179.2 innings thrown. Duffy has been an incredibly inconsistent pitcher during his time in the majors, but there’s no debating that this was a fair deal for both sides.

Duffy could have waited until the offseason and probably could have made over $100 million if he had a decent season in 2017. Instead, he opted to spend the next five years as a member of the Kansas City Royals, and that’s pretty freaking cool.

Speaking of free agents, the Royals will have quite a few others hitting the market this offseason. The biggest names in that group are Lorenzo Cain, Eric Hosmer, and Mike Moustakas, none of whom have a great chance of rejoining the Royals this offseason.

It’ll be an interesting time around the trade deadline should the Royals be looking to sell off pieces because you know those three guys along with Alcides Escobar as well will be on the trading block.

"Yes, it may have looked as though the Royals were selling before the season even began. And yes, there is some degree of truth to that. But the fact of the matter was, the Royals apparently were not planning on bringing either player back after this year."

With Hosmer and Moustakas having Scott Boras their agent, it might be difficult to retain them for the 2018 and beyond seasons. Never say never though, as people weren’t optimistic about Alex Gordon re-signing either.
