The Kansas City Chiefs are back home this week on Thursday Night Football, hosting the Oakland Raiders. Here is how you can follow the action.
The Kansas City Chiefs have reeled off back to back heart attack victories the past couple of weeks. With key road wins over the Broncos and Falcons, the Chiefs are now returning home for a Thursday night battle against the Oakland Raiders. This is a game that may very well determine who comes out on top in the AFC West.
While a short turnaround after a tough game is never ideal, this situation actually favors the Chiefs. The Raiders are also coming off a tough game, but will be going on the road. Oakland is also dealing with some big injury issues on defense while the Chiefs look to be healthy(ish) for the first time all year. Advantage Kansas City.
The Chiefs also have a bit of a strategy advantage this week. The last time these two teams met, Raiders coach Jack Del Rio referred to the Chiefs offense as “gimmicky”. While many fans took that as an insult, it would appear Andy Reid has embraced it…at least over the past few weeks. In recent games, the Chiefs have opened up the trick plays. That means Oakland has a lot more to prepare for on a short week.
Earning Some Respect
I’m kind of tired of hearing everyone refer to the Kansas City Chiefs as “the team nobody is talking about”. Well start talking about them. The Chiefs have won road games against the NFL’s “best” defense and offense in consecutive weeks. Yet somehow, ESPN dropped them in their rankings this week.
There’s also the little fact that Andy Reid has guaranteed that he has yet to suffer a losing season in Kansas City. With last week’s win over the Falcons, the Chiefs secured a winning season for the fourth time in Reid’s four years with the team. At some point you would think the national pundits would take notice that this team is winning.
At 9-3, the Chiefs really do control their destiny for the playoffs, and this week’s game is the reason why. The Raiders are currently 10-2, but one of their losses was at the hands of the Chiefs. If Kansas City can win this game, the teams will be tied, but the Chiefs will own the tie breakers on both division record and head to head games. That is a huge advantage this late in the season.
