The Royals rumors are heating up as the winter temperatures settle in. Evidently, the Los Angeles Dodgers might be interested in Lorenzo Cain and Wade Davis.

The Kansas City Royals rumors are hot and heavy but not necessarily in a way that is pleasing to fans. The Royals seem poised to break up the core of this roster that has finished four straight seasons at .500 or better.

If the Royals are truly interested in selling off some of their valuable pieces, many of whom will be free agents after the 2017 season, outfielder Lorenzo Cain and closer Wade Davis could be going.

According to Andy McCullough of the LA Times, via Twitter, the Dodgers might want Cain and Davis.

Davis and Cain are just two of many players who will see their current contracts expire after the upcoming season. Mike Moustakas, Danny Duffy, Eric Hosmer, and Alcides Escobar could all be free agents after the 2017 season.

Earlier today, Jon Morosi tweeted the Royals might consider moving Duffy if the price is right. If one domino falls, several other might fall as well.

The Dodgers could very well be a good trading partner for the Royals. Los Angeles has several prospects that might be close to Major League ready.

Cody Bellinger might be a possible replacement for Hosmer if the Royals first baseman were to move on at some point.

The Dodgers also have several pitching prospects they might deal if the price were right, including Jose de Leon, Yadier Alvarez, and Jordan Sheffield.

The KC Royals also need help in the outfield. Bellinger can play the outfield, as can prospects Alex Verdugo and Yusniel Diaz. Call to the Pen breaks down some of the top prospects the Dodgers have to offer.

The possibility the Royals become sellers this offseason has been high since Moore insinuated the team had to cut payroll next season.

Their payroll commitments are extremely high, and they’ve already lost players that were key to the Royals’ successes the past two seasons in Edinson Volquez and Kendrys Morales.

It is going to be extremely difficult to replace Morales and his productive, especially if the Royals don’t have the money to spend in free agency.

At this point, the Royals probably need to go all in on a rebuild. They can work to maximize value this offseason and try to find players close to being ready to contribute in the big leagues very soon.

It can be frustrating for fans to see their team dismantle a popular roster but it is part of the business. Success often makes it impossible to keep teams together as players get priced out of the budget, especially for small market teams.
