Royals rumors are starting to swirl and the latest involves beloved starting pitcher Danny Duffy. Could the Royals trade off their number one starter?

The Kansas City Royals could end up surprising us all, and it’s starting early on during the winter meetings. According to Jon Morosi on Twitter, the Royals are gauging trade interest in starting pitcher Danny Duffy.

This would be a shocking move for a team that’s still in contention for a World Series title in 2017, but maybe the new CBA and Duffy set to be a free agent after this season have made them consider this move.

A season ago, Duffy had his best year as a starter. Beginning the season in the bullpen, Duffy was promoted to the rotation due to injuries to other starters and never looked back.

Duffy ended the 2016 season with a 12-3 record, 3.51 ERA, and 188 strikeouts in 42 games and 26 starts. He broke the single game record for strikeouts in a game when he pitched against the Rays in August and nearly pitched a perfect game.

The above tweet is interesting for sure, but could the Royals really be looking to sell off one of their best pieces this offseason? Unless they can get a major bat in the lineup, this move just doesn’t appear to make sense for Kansas City.

Duffy has been outspoken about his love for this team in the past. Back when he was younger and the Royals were horrendous, Duffy had tweeted “Bury me a Royal”. Somehow being traded likely wouldn’t set well with him.

Also – The Kansas City Royals are still in good shape to be a contender this season! Trading Duffy off basically sets the tone of “Oh – We’re going to go ahead and rebuild now while we have the chance”.

I get not re-signing Duffy after this season, especially if he doesn’t perform well in 2017, but to trade him now is crazy.

This is the craziest of Royals rumors I’ve seen floating out there at the moment, but it really does look like Dayton Moore and company are going into winter meetings and the offseason with an open mind.

I guess at the end of the day, we should just trust that Moore knows what he’s doing (he did win us a World Series after all), and if trading Danny Duffy is on the agenda, then so be it.

What do you think of this new rumor, Royals fans? Are you for or against trading Duffman?
