The Kansas City Chiefs travel to Denver to play the Broncos for Sunday Night Football this weekend. Primetime games have not been very kind to the Chiefs as of lately.

There was a stretch where KC Chiefs fans were just happy to see their team on any type of primetime platform. Back when the Chiefs weren’t very good, a Thursday night game was a big deal to the fans.

Now that the team is considered to be a contender, they get more nods on primetime television for the entire nation to watch. It hasn’t been necessarily good for the Kansas City Chiefs though, as they’re 2-5 in primetime during the regular season under Andy Reid.

Their two victories came in 2013 on Thursday Night Football against the Eagles (Reid’s first trip back there since being fired) and in 2014 at home against the Patriots on Monday Night Football.

Three of those five losses, however, came on Sunday Night Football, and it’s been a bad omen for the Chiefs.

Kansas City had an early season game on Sunday Night Football against the Steelers this year and got walloped in the Steel City to the tune of 43-14. They were down 21-0 about five minutes into the game, which was flat out embarrassing.

I don’t know what it is, but the Chiefs are not good in primetime games. Perhaps it’s the pressure of the entire nation watching them, perhaps it’s the opponent they face that particular week. Whatever it is, it’s something that the Chiefs are going to need to overcome in order to be a legitimate threat in the NFL.

On Sunday, the Chiefs will yet again square off against Denver, a common foe of theirs in primetime. The Chiefs have lost every primetime game to the Broncos since Andy Reid took over in 2013 and it’d be nice to finally get a win against them on Sunday night.

Both games that Kansas City will see against the Broncos this year will be in the bright lights of primetime and they need to start proving that they belong to play with the big boys on the big screen.

The KC Chiefs have three total primetime games remaining on their schedule. Sunday’s game in Denver, a week 14 Thursday night game at Arrowhead against the Raiders, and a Christmas Day cage match against the Broncos at Arrowhead.

Those three games could very well be the difference between an AFC West title, a Wild Card berth, or not making the playoffs at all.

Can the Kansas City Chiefs finally overcome their poor performances on primetime television?
