The KU football team pulled off a big overtime upset of the Texas Longhorns on Saturday.
It was the first time the Kansas Jayhawks defeated the Texas Longhorns on the gridiron since 1938. That’s a long time (Thank you, Captain Obvious!).
Of course, the few fans that actually attended the game were ecstatic. They charged the field, celebrated with the team, tore down the goal post and deposited into Potter Lake.
Storming the field (or court, for that matter) is a silly, and sometimes dangerous, tradition. Fans haven’t stormed the court after a win in Allen Fieldhouse since 2003.
Still, the traditions for the basketball programs, and the football programs are far different. Jayhawks have 12 straight Big 12 Conference regular season championships, and now they have one Big 12 victory in the last two seasons.
KU football Twitter-verse was fun Saturday night. Fans, players, and coaches celebrated the big win, and speculation ran rampant about beleaguered Texas head coach Charlie Strong and his future with the Longhorns.

The Jayhawks have worked for this win. They barely missed out on home victories against Iowa State and TCU this season.
Fans want to see evidence of improvement and seeing some competitive results is a big step in the right direction.
There is a long way to go. The Kansas offense is still stale. Against Texas, they still only scored one offensive touchdown. They need to develop a quarterback they can rely on to take care of the football.
The defense has made strides this season. Against the Longhorns, they forced six turnovers. It seems as if the defense has carried the offense most of the season.

Beating Texas, even on a down year for the Longhorns, is a big deal for this KU football team. It is a step in the right direction. It shows fans the team might be turning things around, ever so slowly.
Maybe this victory will bleed over into next season, and the Jayhawks can win a few more in the upcoming years.

There is no doubt this was a huge win for this KU football program. The Jayhawks were desperate for something positive to happen before the end of the season. Beating Texas certainly qualifies and it gives head coach Dave Beatie something on which to build on for the future.
