Special Teams

When it comes to special teams, I don’t think anyone will fault me when I say that I know next to nothing on the Jacksonville Jaguars special teams unit. I don’t really watch much Jaguars football.

I decided to look up each aspect of special teams though and give the rankings and compare just to see who might have the edge in this match-up.

Cairo Santos kicks for the Chiefs and Jason Myers does so for the Jags. Santos is tied for ninth right now with 14 total field goals made and Myers is tied for 18th with 11 field goal attempts converted.

Santos has been shaky in the past few weeks, but we saw just how good the third-year man out of Tulane was to start the year off. I’m confident that he can become one of the best kickers in the NFL this season.

As for the punters, I decided to go by how many punts they downed inside the 20. Dustin Colquitt is ranked sixth in that category with 15 punts inside the 20 while Jacksonville’s punter, Brad Nortman has had ten.

Downing a punt inside the 20 is huge because it puts the opposition at a disadvantage and gives them poor field position. Obviously the further away from your end zone you are, the harder it will be to score. Football 101.

The Chiefs actually lead the league in punt return yards with 254 so far this year and the Jaguars only have 109 yards off of punt returns. Kickoffs, however, see the Jags holding the advantage with 420 return yards and the Chiefs sitting with 354 return yards.

So, overall, it appears Kansas City has the more well balanced special teams unit. Going off these stats, that is. There are probably tons of other areas you can look at, but these were the ones I rolled with this week.

Advantage: Kansas City
