Jamaal Charles To Injured Reserve

More from KC Kingdom

Perhaps the biggest news that came out of yesterday was that Jamaal Charles was headed back to IR.  The star running back was dealing with knee complications from his surgery.  A visit with the noted Dr James Andrews confirmed that Charles would need another surgery on the knee.  That likely ends the season for Jamaal Charles, and possibly even his career.

The most optimistic timetable for a return for Jamaal Charles is eight weeks.  That would have him back in time for the end of the season and the start of the playoffs.  However, even if he returns, there is no guarantee that he will be ready to play right away…if ever.  Chiefs fans won’t want to think about it, but this may be the end of Jamaal Charles in the NFL.

A lot remains to be seen with this situation.  However, with a $7 million cap hit in 2017, it is hard to see the Chiefs not taking some kind of action.  I, for one, believe that KC will try to do a contract extension and spread the remaining cap hit out.  Unfortunately, I also have to admit that there is a distinct possibility that isn’t done.  Charles could be cut, or even choose to retire.

All in all, it was just a lousy day for Chiefs fans.  There will be more news today though as KC currently sits with two openings on the roster and one on the Practice Squad.  Hopefully the additions the Chiefs make will help take away the sting of the losses.

The Kansas City Chiefs are still contenders in the AFC.  This team is well built and has the depth to withstand these injuries.  With their next three opponents all having losing records, there should be confidence that the Chiefs can keep winning until reinforcements (i.e. Justin Houston) can arrive.
