The Kansas City Chiefs had high expectations for this season, but when push comes to shove, this team is the same as several others: Just a middle-tier, middle of the pack, average football team.

“Whoa, Leigh. You’re crazy! This team has loads of talent.”

Okay, yes. This team does have loads of talent, yet here they are: Four games into the season and sitting at 2-2. That, by definition, is an average football team.

The way the NFL works is simple. You have your good teams, your bad teams, and then everyone else is kind of just there. Those “just there” teams are the average teams, who are capable of making a run, but not deep into the postseason or especially to a Super Bowl.

The Kansas City Chiefs are an average team. They’ll continue to be an average team until that next great player comes to town to take this team the distance.

Over the past few years, the great teams would have been the New England Patriots, Denver Broncos, Seattle Seahawks, and Carolina Panthers. The Pittsburgh Steelers and Green Bay Packers could also be categorized here, as they’re almost always in postseason contention.

The Patriots and Seahawks squared off in the Super Bowl in the 2014 season and the Broncos and Panthers did the same last year. These are the same teams that are usually “in the running” for the bigger games.

Now, this season is kind of different, as the Panthers have been struggling early on. The only really GREAT teams in the league right now are the Patriots and maybe the Vikings and Falcons. Cases could be made for those last two as well.

The Chiefs won’t be one of those great teams until they get an elite quarterback, plain and simple. Alex Smith has shown that he’s good enough to get the Kansas City Chiefs to the playoffs and then also win a playoff game, but that might be his ceiling.

It’s not just a knock on Smith. It’s a knock on all non-elite quarterbacks.

On the other side, you have the really bad teams. These are typically headlined by the Cleveland Browns, who are nearly always near the bottom of all NFL stats. Unless, of course, the stat is most quarterbacks started in a year.

Other bad teams this season are the Chicago Bears and the New Orleans Saints, both sitting with just one win a piece. The Jaguars also look to be pretty bad this year, which I honestly thought wouldn’t be the case in 2016.

After you sort through the few GREAT teams and the few HORRIBLE teams, there’s just one group left: the average teams. These are literally anyone left in the NFL.

The average teams are capable of beating up one another, occasionally beating the great teams, and occasionally losing to the bad teams. It’s football.

The Kansas City Chiefs are an average team. They’ll continue to be an average team until that next great player comes to town to take this team the distance.

I know this opinion won’t set well with anyone, but when was the last time the Chiefs went to the playoffs in back to back years? Exactly. Great teams go to the playoffs nearly every year and make a run at the Super Bowl every year.

The Kansas City Chiefs aren’t that. Sorry, folks. They’re your classic middle-tier, middle of the pack, average NFL team.
