Over the past decade, the Kansas City Chiefs fan base has been disgruntled over the quarterback position. In 2013, the Chiefs went out and traded for Alex Smith, former first round draft pick, a lot of fans were not content.

The quarterback hatred started after losing Trent Green to retirement. Since then, the Kansas City Chiefs have seen the worst of the worst at the most important position in all of football. The days of Brodie Croyle, Tyler Thigpen, Tyler Palko, Brady Quinn, and lastly, everyone’s favorite, Matt Cassel followed the Green era. The fan base and organization were desperate. They needed a future.

With the emergence of Colin Kaepernick, Alex Smith got traded to the Chiefs in 2013 from the San Francisco 49ers. The previous year, Smith had lost his job when he suffered from a concussion against St. Louis.

The game before his concussion, Smith completed 18 of 19 for 232 yards and tallied three touchdowns to go along with it. His 104.1 passer rating during the 2012 season, ranked third amongst the league and led the league in completion percentage at 70 percent.

When Alex Smith came to the Kansas City Chiefs in 2013, it seemed like Kansas City’s year. The Chiefs ended up putting together an 11-5 season got them to the playoffs as a Wild Card team. A game that most of us remember, Andrew Luck and the Colts rallied back from a 28-point deficit to win 45-44.

After the upsetting Wild Card game, Alex Smith’s contract was up and the Chief’s resigned him in 2014 for 4 years/ $68 million. This left the Kansas City Chiefs community divided. At the time, Smith was 30 years old and a lot of Chiefs Kingdom didn’t want to see him back in a Chiefs uniform.

The 2014 season got even worse for the Smith haters. The Chiefs went 9-7 missing the Playoffs. A lot was put on Smith for not wanting to throw the ball down the field and for being too conservative. He rounded out the season with 18 touchdowns and 6 interceptions with a 93.4 passer rating.

Progressively improving, Alex Smith had the greatest year of his career in 2015 at 31 years old. Throwing for 3,486 yards with 20 touchdowns and seven interceptions, Smith led the Chiefs to a their first Playoff victory since 94’ when he and his fellow Chiefs dominated the Houston Texans at their house, 30-0. He did it all without stud running back, Jamaal Charles and was sacked 45 times throughout the season.

Since last years playoff win, the hatred towards Alex Smith has lessened but there is still gas near the fire for some fans. Smith is nowhere close to being a field general nor an explosive Cam Newton, but he is a guy that is respected on and off the field.

He is not going to lose the team too many games and needs an offensive line to show what he can do down the field. Progressively getting better in his older years, do not give up on Smith just yet.
