The Kansas City Chiefs should be looking for a reliable number two receiver. The team needs an outside presence other than Jeremy Maclin. Could that man be Anquan Boldin?

The Kansas City Chiefs may have competition. There’s been conflicting rumors that the New Orleans Saints have interest in acquiring Anquan Boldin, according to pro football rumors.  The Saints are supposedly making a “strong push” for the veteran wide receiver as of last Thursday.

Then this tweet by Saints beat reporter, Katherine Terrell of The Times-Picayune, says the Saints don’t have interest in signing Boldin. The tweet came out Friday.

The 35-year-old looked good last season for the San Francisco 49ers. He hauled in 69 passes on 111 targets for 789 yards and four touchdowns in 14 games played. He also had to adjust to a new quarterback, Blaine Gabbert, halfway through the season.

The 49ers had a horrible season. The team by the bay received five total wins on the year. San Francisco finished in last place in the tough NFC West division.

The most recent Walter Payton Award winner, is the type of guy teams want on and off the field.

The ageing Boldin would like to play for a winning team this season, according to NFL Network Insider, Rand Getlin.

The Kansas City Chiefs could be the right team for the veteran free agent. The Chiefs went 11-5 last season. The team won a playoff game for the first time in 21 years.

Kansas City dominated the Houston Texans 30-0 in Houston. The Chiefs fell short in New England 27-20 against the Tom Brady lead Patriots in the 2015 AFC Divisional playoff game. The loss came without Jeremy Maclin for most of the game. A banged up pass rush didn’t help the Chiefs chances of winning the game either.

Boldin could be the missing piece for the Kansas City Chiefs offense. The Chiefs need a possession receiver with experience and talent. During the playoffs, Jason Avant stepped up and made big plays on the big stage for the Chiefs but he’s no Boldin.

Last season, Avant came off the bench and received 15 passes for 119 yards and zero touchdowns for Kansas City. The Chiefs mixed and matched the secondary outside receiver. It seemed as if Alex Smith hardly looked to the secondary outside receiver at all last season.

If the Chiefs acquire Boldin, he would take that role with ease. No one on the roster has the pedigree he does. In 2013 and 2014, Boldin accumulated more than 1,000 yards each season. If he played a full season last year, he might have had three straight 1,000 yard seasons in a row.

The Chiefs may not have enough cap space to add Boldin. Spotrac has the Chiefs cap space at $206,957 according to spotrac.com. The veteran league minimum salary is $525,000 for one season also according to Spotrac.

The Kansas City Chiefs would need to let a player walk to afford Boldin. His stats say he is well worth it. The Chiefs are holding four quarterbacks on the active roster. If the Chiefs cut one of them, that might give the Chiefs the room they need to offer Boldin a contract.

The Chiefs need to make a decision fast if Boldin is the guy to get this team further into the playoffs. Training camp begins July 30th in St. Joseph, Missouri on the campus of Missouri Western State University.
