The Kansas City Royals gave away a game to the Detroit Tigers on Sunday, and it was a victory that the team really could have used. Should the team now strongly consider selling at the deadline?

The Kansas City Royals are eight games back for the division lead and are sitting in third place in the division. It hasn’t been the type of season that fans were hoping for, and honestly, the Royals might want to consider selling away some players for the sake of the future.

Look. I’m all about “championship windows” and trying to win when you can, but does anyone really think this KC Royals squad can win the World Series this year? I sure don’t.

Maybe if Mike Moustakas wasn’t out for the year or if half the team hadn’t spent time on the disabled list, the odds would be better, but sadly that’s not the case.

These Royals are good enough to win games, but not good enough to win big games. That should make them sellers at the deadline.

The truth is that this Royals team is just mediocre at best, and they should try to get some decent prospects while they have an opportunity to.

Last year, the team traded five prospects (all pitchers) for two players to help down the stretch of the season. Now, the Royals won the World Series, so yes, those trades were worth it, but it has hurt the team in 2016 not having those arms.

Four out of five of those traded players are now starting for the teams that acquired them, and the Royals really could have used that help with the way their rotation is struggling this year.

As for who the team could trade away, you have to look at players who would be free agents at the end of the season. Those are names like Luke Hochevar, Kendrys Morales, and Edinson Volquez.

While I haven’t seen any rumors linking the Royals to selling anyone just yet, Lee Judge of The Kansas City Star alerted fans that these next 15 games or so will be critical to what the team decides to do.

Yes, it would be unfortunate for the Royals to miss the playoffs this year, but at the same time, this team isn’t the same team that captured the hearts of Kansas City last year. This isn’t the same team that battled back in almost every postseason game and reigned victorious.

This team hasn’t been awful this year, but they’re not the 2015 Royals. Hell, they’re not even the 2014 or 2013 Royals.

What do you think, Royals nation? Am I just super negative or do you agree that the Kansas City Royals should sell some pieces this year in order to have prospects for the future?
