The KC Royals have had some issues with their starting rotation, but the biggest issue has been Chris Young. Young has not been good as a starter this year and is hurting the team big time.

Fans might remember how great Chris Young was for the Kansas City Royals last season. He was phenomenal throughout the regular season and during the postseason.

This season, however, Young has not been the same reliable guy for the boys in blue. He was originally named the number two starter heading into the regular season, but quickly went downhill for the team.

In 12 starts for the Royals, Young has an ERA of 6.71 in 53.2 innings. He’s allowed 40 runs with 22 of those being home runs.

Young has not been good as a starter and many thought his early season struggles might have been due to injury. He went on the disabled list for a little bit and when he returned, he took over as a reliever.

The bullpen is where Young fared much better for Kansas City. He pitched in four innings as a reliever and didn’t allow a run.

While four innings isn’t a huge sample size, Chris Young has showed that he’s a much better asset for the Kansas City Royals in the bullpen. Mainly because if Young is in the bullpen, then he’s not in the starting rotation.

It’s gotten to the point with Young that when he’s slated to start a game, fans know that the Royals are going to be at a huge disadvantage. He fared decently against the Cardinals in St. Louis, but only pitched four innings.

If the Kansas City Royals want to truly defend their World Series title this year, then Chris Young needs to be removed from the rotation. I understand that a large part of the problem has been that he’s there because Kris Medlen is on the disabled list, and Dillon Gee didn’t fare much better as a starter.

All season long, fans have been hearing about Mike Minor. Hopefully Minor can pitch for the team and in the rotation soon because the Royals need to add another arm and remove Young from starting. He’s become a huge liability for the team and it’s safe to mark down any of his starts as a loss.

If the Royals do end up making the playoffs, they’d likely not let Chris Young start in a game, but getting to the playoffs with him in the rotation is highly unlikely.
