The injury bug has hit wherever the Kansas City Royals play this year. The previous two seasons the Royals stayed away from health issues. The law of averages has caught up to Kansas City.

The Kansas City Royals suffered some major injuries to key players. Starting third baseman, Mike Moustakas (Moose) is done for the year while rehabbing a torn ACL injury he suffered when he collided with Alex Gordon.

On that same play, Gordon broke a bone in his hand. The Kansas City Royals have missed Gordon’s defense. The other day in Baltimore, Jarrod Dyson leisurely went after a ground ball hit down the third baseline. The runner for the Orioles sees him doing so and takes off for second. The throw skips into second and the runner advanced on a should have been single. Dyson may have speed but he didn’t show it there.

On offense, Dyson popped up a bunt with a runner on second and of course a double play happened. These kinds of plays by guys that shouldn’t be starting are taking a toll on the team. There seems to be no spark on offense or defense. The starting pitching staff hasn’t been doing well either (minus Danny Duffy).

Mike Moustakas‘ power is missed dearly. Before the injury, he hit seven home runs in 27 games. He had a slugging percentage of .500 as well. That might not be a large sample size but the Royals need another power bat in the lineup in Mooses’ absence.

Cheslor Cuthbert plays solid defense at third base. Moustakas’ injury isn’t noticed as much there but Moose has a bit of a stronger arm than Cuthbert.

Speaking of Cuthbert, he also got injured. During the Baltimore series, Cuthbert slid into second base and Jonathan Schoop accidentally threw the ball at Cuthbert’s right forearm and it didn’t miss. The arm instantly swelled and became a mix of black and blue colors. Thankfully the injury wasn’t severe enough to keep Cuthbert out of the following game.

Cuthbert ran into Salvador Perez‘s thigh and knee a few weeks ago on a foul pop up play. Cuthbert couldn’t hear Perez call for the ball. He tired to avoid him but instead slammed into his leg. Fortunately, Perez avoided a disabled list stint and missed just seven games due to a quadriceps bruise.

Alex Gordon’s replacement in left field, Brett Eibner also got injured. He twisted his ankle on the lip of the grass near the warning track. At first glance, it looked like a season ending Achilles tendon injury. The Kansas City Royals dogged another major injury.

Before the injury, Eibner gave the team a spark offensively and defensively. He had six hits in 13 plate appearances. He hit three doubles and drove in two. The Royals need his power and speed back as soon as possible. Yesterday Eibner began a rehab stint in Omaha. He had an RBI double during the game.

When the Kansas City Royals get healthy again, the offense and defense should be better. Only scoring four runs in the last six games combined is unexceptional for any team, let alone the defending World Series Champions. Health is on the way.
