Right-handed flamethrower Riley Pint could be the second Kansas City area high school player to be drafted in the top five of the MLB Draft in the last five years.

Riley Pint is listed as the number two overall draft prospect for the 2016 MLB Draft, according to MLB.com. Pint attended St. Thomas Aquinas High School in Lenexa, Kansas.

In 2012, the Kansas City Royals selected Bubba Starling from Gardner, Kansas, number five overall.  The is no chance Pint will be available this year when the Royals pick at number 67.

The Royals lost their first-round pick when they signed Ian Kennedy this offseason.

According to MLB.com, no right-handed high school pitcher has every been drafted number one overall.

The 6’4″, 210-pound Pint could buck this trend but it is more likely the Philadelphia Phillies will take left-hander Jason Groome or college left-hander A.J. Puk.

The MLB Network experts have some excellent breakdown of Pint’s place in the draft and some great scouting video. He has the chance to be a big league stud in the future.

MLB.com offers these positives about Pint in their scouting report:

"Pint has an electric arm and added 15 pounds of muscle during the offseason, boosting his fastball velocity to a consistent 93-97 mph and a high of 102 this spring. He throws a power curveball that already is a plus pitch and can turn it into a harder slider when he wants. The Louisiana State recruit presently has little need for a changeup, though his has good fade and gives him another plus offering when he needs one."

Pint does come with some negatives, as you would expect from an 18-year old who throws so hard.

"While Pint has a huge ceiling, he does come with some risk. He lacks consistency with his mechanics, sometimes finding it difficult to repeat his arm slot and find the strike zone. There’s some effort in Pint’s delivery, leading to some concerns about his future command."

It is always exciting when a local Kansas City player can make a splash nationally, and Pint has a chance to be an ace. Not many high school kids can top 100 mph like Pint can. That is an impressive feat for pitchers at any level.

Here is a good peak at Pint’s stuff and delivery.

Overpowered high school hitters looked to have little chance against a pitcher of Pint’s caliber.

41 Action News put together a nice news profile on the youngster.

It’s unfortunate the Royals have no chance at grabbing this gifted hometown youngster, but few fans would trade their World Series championship for an early first round pick. Too often the Royals had early picks over the years.
