Kansas City Chiefs: Tyler Bray Has Big Shoes To Fill

facebooktwitterreddit

There have been reports out of the Kansas City Chiefs camp that journeyman Tyler Bray is taking reps behind starter Alex Smith. Andy Reid likes what he sees in Bray, but will he be able to fill the shoes of former Chief Chase Daniel?

Former Tennessee quarterback Tyler Bray is entering his fourth season with the Kansas City Chiefs. He also recently signed a two-year extension with the team.

Bray has never thrown an official pass in a NFL game, but he showed great promise in a preseason game in 2013 against the Green Bay Packers. Bray went 14-25 for 169 yards and three touchdowns with one interception in that match-up.

This is a very small sample size to give Bray the backup spot, but the KC Chiefs do not really have a choice when it comes to the rest of the guys on the depth chart.

Aaron Murray would have been my pick to backup Alex Smith due to his success at the college level. Bray has a bigger arm though, which in theory brings bigger plays, especially in today’s “pass happy” NFL.

Bray is coming off an ACL injury that he obtained last offseason, but he is coming back and he will have the reigns going in to the preseason.

The shoes of Chase Daniel are going to big ones to fill for the former undrafted Volunteer. Daniel may have only been a backup, but he had a veteran presence with the team. Daniel was also a player that fans felt could win a game if it came to him coming in to the game.

Daniel had a 1-1 record as a starter for the Kansas City Chiefs, both games coming on the last game of the season and both against the San Diego Chargers. He would have been 2-0 if it was not for a missed field goal at the end of regulation.

Daniel played very well and was a player that could use the whole play book, not making the Chiefs change the game plan just because a new quarterback entered the game.

Tyler Bray is a big bodied quarterback that has big play potential. At 6-6 and 215 pounds, Bray has the potential to be a durable quarterback. It will be interesting to see how mobile Bray is during the preseason and how he comes back from that ACL surgery.

The Kansas City Chiefs offense is dependent on a mobile quarterback and Smith has fit that mold perfectly as a starter. In 2015, he ran for 498 yards on 84 attempts. Smith’s rushing always made the Chiefs a very dangerous team especially on third-downs, where teams would have to account for the quarterback on every play.

A lot of the times, when the play looked like it was broken down and things were looking bad, Alex Smith would pull a play out that amazed the fans.

If Bray is going to be effective, as well as keep the number two spot going in to the 2016 season, he is going to have to show that he can fill the shoes that Chase Daniel left.

What do you think KC Kingdom? Do you think Bray has what it takes or should there be a different player at the number two spot?
