KC Royals: Comeback Was One For The Ages

On Friday night, the KC Royals came back from a 5-1 deficit in a game that shifted momentum twice. Saturday’s win found a way to top it.

After watching his bullpen surrender a late lead to the KC Royals on Friday night, White Sox coach Robin Ventura wasted no time in going to his closer with a 7-1 lead.

David Robertson looked like he was going to mow down the Royals as he got Paulo Orlando to strike out looking. That’s when magic happened…again.

Cheslor Cuthbert started the rally with a base hit up the middle. Considering he may be what sends the Royals’ third All-Star player to the DL inside a week, it was great that he was able to chip in and contribute. He’d later be pulled with some quadriceps issues of his own.

All kinds of crazy things happened in that wild ninth inning that saw the Royals plate seven runs to win the game.

Brett Eibner, the ‘Salvy Splash’ recipient on Friday night, followed up that performance by going hitless through the first eight frames.

He followed up Cuthbert’s single with a double to right field that brought Omar Infante to the plate with one out. Both Infante and Alcides Escobar walked which drove in the first run. First of all, let’s acknowledge how rare it is that either of those two walk period, let alone back to back. Each of them have nine walks on the season.

The Royals got a break when Whit Merrifield came through with his second two RBI single in as many days. The ball deflected off the pitcher’s glove and rolled into right field to score two runs.

Perhaps the least talked about play of the inning came in the next at bat by Lorenzo Cain. If not for Cain’s hustle down the line, he could have been doubled up and the game would have ended before any athletes with great hair could intervene.

Eric Hosmer and Drew Butera, filling in for an injured Salvador Perez, hit consecutive doubles. Butera’s double tied the game for the Royals and he punctuated his trip to second base with his patented hair toss.

The White Sox elected to fill the bases with Royals after a wild pitch by Tommy Kahnle sent Butera to third base. Brett Eibner stepped back up to the dish looking for his second hit of the inning.

Kahnle gave it his best effort and fired in pitches that touched 99 miles per hour on the radar gun. Eibner worked the count to 3-2 before firing a shot towards first base. The ball skipped off Jose Abreu’s glove and Eibner rounded first base ‘trying’ to avoid the mob that would ensue.

This felt like a playoff game for the Royals. Watching Alcides Escobar and Eric Hosmer jumping up and down on the top steps during the at bat looked an awful lot like the same team that beat the Astros when they were only six outs from elimination.

The Royals have something inside them that prevents them from giving up. It’s really special what’s happening with the Royals right now and it’s fantastic to see that it’s carried on through their farm system and to the ‘next man up’.

Cuthbert, Merrifield, Eibner, and Butera all had hands in this come from behind victory. None of them were a part of the 2014 Wild Card game. Butera had come up clutch for the Royals in that Astros win last season, and last night he delivered again.

Moment’s like these don’t happen often. Kick back, and relive the action and relish in all of it’s majesty.
