KC Royals News: Ominous Storms Bring Bad News
By Scott Dillon
Today’s KC Royals news is focused on the wave of injuries that the KC Royals have to deal with for the rest of the year.
As the Midwest was slammed with thunderstorms and tornadoes yesterday, the KC Royals released some news that could ultimately hurt their chances at a third straight postseason berth.
Mike Moustakas was put on the 15-day disabled list with a torn ACL, making him unable to play the rest of the season. There’s also likely no chance he’d be ready for postseason play this late into the season either.
Last year, Marcus Stroman tore his ACL in Spring Training and made his way back to pitch at the end of the year and in the postseason. He had an extra two months to heal prior to that comeback.
As has been the story for the Royals so far this season, this injury came on a play that just didn’t seem to fit.
On a foul pop fly against the White Sox last Sunday, Alex Gordon charged and Mike Moustakas retreated and both made a valiant attempt at catching the ball. Unlike year’s past, the ball fell and two Royals landed on the disabled list with significant injuries.

Since the injuries to the two All-Star Royals, the Royals themselves have gone 2-1. That was against a hapless Twins team however.
Still, the offensive production over those two games was encouraging. Whit Merrifield and Cheslor Cuthbert both look mature beyond their years at the plate and in the field. They’re bound to experience some growing pains.
As if losing those two players wasn’t enough, the Royals also lost designated hitter, if you can still call him a hitter, Kendrys Morales for a few days with a sprained finger. Maybe the rest will do him some good.
The Royals faced injuries last season and found a way to overcome, but losing Moustakas is especially painful. They’re losing him for one of the last two seasons he could suit up as a Royal and the fan favorite may only have 2017 left in Royals’ blue.
Sometimes it’s hard to see the forest through the trees, so here’s a positive ‘take’ on the situation. At some point, the Royals were going to have to see what they had in the way of the next group of Royals’ players.
Now they are getting a chance to determine whether or not they’ll need to fully retain ‘the core’ or if there is enough ‘gas in the tank’ to make some contenders of the Royals for years to come.
The injury bug has avoided the Royals in mass over the past few seasons. It appears that it’s found it’s way to Kauffman stadium so far this season in bulk.
