KC Royals News: Kyle Zimmer Just Cannot Stay Healthy
By Scott Dillon
Today’s KC Royals news is focused on the health of Kyle Zimmer’s arm or rather, the lack thereof.
Kyle Zimmer was the KC Royals first-round draft pick back in 2012. He was supposed to be their eventual ‘Ace’ and was expected to debut as early as 2013.
He’s been held up by numerous injuries ever since and now he’s getting held back again.
After a strong finish to last season, the Royals and their fans were excited to see Zimmer pitching in Spring Training. That joy turned to dismay quickly when he stayed in Arizona for extended Spring Training with a balky shoulder.
Now, after heading out on his rehab assignment, he’s dealing with shoulder soreness again. Jeffrey Flanagan, the Royals’ beat writer for MLB.com, tweeted the following:
Rustin Dodd followed up that tweet with one of his own. His take offers a little more positivity:
It’s a good thing, at least for now, that Kyle Zimmer isn’t actually on the disabled list. Perhaps he’ll heal someday.

What The Royals Could Do For the Draft

The KC Royals are really hoping that Kyle Zimmer will eventually put together a full season with no injuries.
They’ve been waiting on him to bring his stuff, and it is electric stuff, to the Major League level. He has the stuff to be a strikeout per inning guy and lead the front of a rotation. That is, if his arm doesn’t fall off in the process.
He is young and there is time for him to come around, but at a certain point people have to wonder if he’ll ever be healthy enough for the big leagues. If he is, will he ever be able to manage close to 200 innings in a full season.
The Royals are likely just being cautious with their future ‘Ace’ right now. They aren’t in a position where they have to force him up and risk further injury. If he feels so much as a cold coming on, it may be best that he be used with caution.
There is good news on the horizon for the KC Royals. Mike Minor is in Triple-A and the Royals are looking for him to join the staff in early June. He could be a huge addition to the Royals in either a bullpen or starting capacity. If he can find his 2013 numbers again, he’ll be one of the Royals best pitchers.
