Today’s KC Royals news is focused on the Royals’ third baseman who may be working on transitioning to second base.

The great offensive and defensive play by Royals’ third baseman Cheslor Cuthbert has left many people wondering what will happen when Mike Moustakas comes back to the lineup.

There is little to no chance that Mike Moustakas, a fan favorite, is going to be relegated to some kind of backup role. His excellent brand of defense also doesn’t make it an option to move him into the DH role for the Royals.

The two places that would appear to offer a spot to Cheslor Cuthbert are right field or second base.

He does have some experience at second base in the minor leagues, but he hasn’t played that position extensively. The two positions are very different and it shouldn’t just be assumed that he can transition easily.

The good news is that the coaching staff is working with him on his footwork and ball control from the second base position.

The KC Royals could also take a look at working Cuthbert into right or even left field. If he were to move to left, Alex Gordon would need to transition to right field. He’s got the arm to live out there and as he loses a step that transition could protect the Royals’ investment.

Cuthbert has a hose for an arm himself. He’s already showed it off on more than one occasion across the diamond and could have the arm to play the outfield corners.

He’s got some speed so it’s not hard to think he could make that adjustment. It also wouldn’t be the first time the Royals have successfully converted a third baseman to the corner outfield.

The Royals are going to want to find a way to keep Cuthbert in the lineup. He’s still developing and is only going to get better. He also brings a level of energy to the field and the clubhouse that the Royals need if they’re going to break out of this slump.
