Kansas City Royals: Is The Slump Officially Over
By Charles Lam
The bats came alive under the lights of New Yankee Stadium. The Kansas City Royals hit homers and played good defense. Does this mean the slump is over?
Remember when Lorenzo Cain had a batting average near .200? Well he doesn’t anymore. In fact, Cain’s been one of the hottest hitters in the Royals’ line up lately.
On May 10th, Cain delivered Kansas City three home runs. Unfortunately, the Royals lost the game 10 to 7, but that didn’t stop Cain from driving in five runs. Cain followed up his great outing the following day, going one for two with two RBI’s and two walks, shooting his batting average to .274.
Christian Colon saved the day on defense, when he robbed Starlin Castro of a would be hit up the middle. The bases were loaded with two outs in the bottom of the second for the Yankees, Ventura looked shaky on the mound but the defense came through. Because of that one play, the Royals saved the bullpen while also allowing the offense a little wiggle room.

Getting through six innings has been a problem for the Royals starters lately. So getting six quality innings from Ventura was huge for the starters and the bullpen as a group. Ventura gave up three runs off six hits and walked three while only striking out one batter.
Another guy that seems to be getting it together is Salvador Perez (Salvy). During the Royals four-run top of the first inning, Salvy jacked a three-run bomb over the left field wall. Salvy then worked with Ventura getting him through six innings of OK work.
The back of the bullpen looked like its dominate self. Danny Duffy pitched a hitless seventh inning striking out one. A lead off double didn’t phase Kelvin Herrera. He got through the 8th with no runs allowed. Wade Davis sent a message to the Yankees when he hit Bret Gardner in retaliation for three hit Royals batters. Davis then struck out Castro on a nasty change up to end the game.

These signs all point that a winning streak could be around the corner. The Royals are finally awake.
One of the reasons why the Royals struggled the last couple of weeks could have been all these road games bunched together. Kansas City has played 12 of the last 15 games on the road. To make things worse, the road trip began on the west coast in Los Angeles.
Baseball players have a routine. When the routine is shaken up by traveling that far for a game and gaining two hours of daylight, it may be enough to put this team in a funk they are now just getting out of.
The KC Royals go for the series split tonight. Ian Kennedy takes the mound for Kansas City looking to get a winning streak going. This weekend the Royals take on the Atlanta Braves at the K. Maybe the a winning streak is coming soon. We can only hope.

The KC Royals may not be out of the woods yet, but earning a split with the Yankees would be a good start. Hopefully, they’ll take Nathan Eovaldi to task tonight as Ian Kennedy toes the rubber for the good guys.
