Today’s KC Chiefs news is focused on the Chiefs new special teams weapon and wide receiver Tyreek Hill. At least he’s saying the right things.

When the KC Chiefs drafted the speedy wide receiver Tyreek Hill out of the University of Western Alabama during the 2016 NFL draft, there was an outcry of anger from a lot of the fans (KC Kingdom writers included).

Tyreek Hill was a talented young player for the Oklahoma State Cowboys before a domestic violence charge saw him dismissed from the team. Put simply: He did something that no one should ever do.

Some people don’t have an opinion on the subject and others think that he should get a second chance to redeem himself. While there are those who didn’t care he was selected, a good portion of fans were up in arms about it (understandably so)

Hill, for his part, is at least saying the right things. He’s not trying to make excuses and even understands that he’s not winning any popularity contests in Kansas City right now. In an article at ESPN by Adam Teicher, Hill was quoted saying:

"“I did something wrong. I just let my emotions get the best of me and I shouldn’t have [done] it. They have every right to be mad. But guess what? I [plan] to come back and be a better man and be a better citizen and everything will take care of itself…Going forward, I just want people to know that I’m a hard-working kid, dedicated to what he does and really a good citizen, a good teammate and like I said, a good, hard worker who’s trying to help the team out.”"

If Hill continues to pursue counseling and can redeem himself as a person then maybe he was a risk worth taking for the KC Chiefs. It’s still going to take more than a few words to earn the respect of the fans in Kansas City.

It’s not going to take too long to see if Hill is just blowing smoke or if he’s actually making progress on himself as a human being. He’ll be under the scrutiny of the team and the city and when he makes a mistake on the field he’s likely to hear about it both loudly and clearly. How he responds will be very telling.

He may be one of the fastest, if not the fastest, player in the league this next season if he sticks with the Chiefs after training camp. He’s not going to be able to outrun his troubled past quickly and his patience in the process is going to be an interesting story to watch.
