KC Chiefs News: 2016 NFL Draft Class
KC Chiefs news is all about the 2016 NFL Draft and the new players that were welcomed into Chiefs Kingdom this past weekend.
Nine new prospects entered Chiefs Kingdom over the weekend and for the most part, it seemed to be a pretty successful draft for the Kansas City Chiefs. The team welcomed in five new defensive players and four new offensive players and all should be able to provide something to the organization.
The first pick the Chiefs made was in the second round and it was Chris Jones out of Mississippi State. Jones attended the draft, meaning he was likely thought to be a first round pick and the Chiefs grabbed him 37th overall. This could end up being a huge steal for a team that loves to put a tremendous defense on the field.
To keep their trend going with defensive steals, the Chiefs nabbed KeiVarae Russell in the third round, who many analysts said could even be a late first round or early second round pick. Russell could very well compete for a spot in the secondary, which needs some upgrading after Sean Smith departed this offseason.
In the fourth round, the Chiefs selected Parker Ehinger, Demarcus Robinson, and Eric Murray; Ehinger is a guard out of Cincinnati, Robinson is a wide receiver from Florida, and Murray is a cornerback out of Minnesota.
Ehinger could end up competing for a starting spot at offensive guard despite maybe being a bit of a reach in the draft. Robinson had some suspensions while at Florida, but maybe he’ll be able to turn it around and compete for a key role in the Chiefs offense. Murray is likely just a depth piece for the next year or so.

The fifth round was where things got interesting. The KC Chiefs picked up a new quarterback in Kevin Hogan, but made a puzzling decision when they drafted Tyreek Hill out of West Alabama. Hill was kicked out of Oklahoma State for choking his pregnant girlfriend, and the decision to draft him has seen Chiefs Kingdom less than enthused, and for good reason.
The Kansas City Chiefs closed out their 2016 NFL Draft with cornerback D.J. White and defensive end Dadi Nicolas in the sixth round. White made it three cornerbacks for the Chiefs in this draft, and Nicolas adds an intriguing piece to the defensive scheme.

Overall, this draft class seems like a good bunch. The Hill selection has kind of overshadowed everything positive, but when you look at the other picks, there’s a lot to like about this group of rookies.
Hogan has the potential to step in and become a solid backup quarterback and the two early round picks could very well compete for starting jobs on the defense.
