KC Chiefs Draft Cornerback D.J. White In 2016 NFL Draft
The KC Chiefs have made it clear that they’re all about improving the cornerback position during the 2016 NFL Draft. They selected their third cornerback of the draft with D.J. White in round five.
Add another cornerback to that big board for the Kansas City Chiefs. D.J. White out of Georgia Tech. The Chiefs grabbed KelVarae Russell in the third round and Eric Murray in the fourth round, and now have added yet another guy for the secondary.
White, a senior at Georgia Tech, played three seasons for the Yellow Jackets. He racked up 154 tackles, 21 defended passes, and seven interceptions during those three seasons.
He was a captain for Georgia Tech and started all three seasons. He’s a good leaper and was able to force receivers to fumble in each of his three seasons.

This is an interesting pick, as the KC Chiefs already grabbed two cornerbacks early on. They have Marcus Peters and Phillip Gaines as the two main starters for their cornerback spots, but do all of these corner selections mean they’re not entirely confident in that young duo?

It’s interesting that the Chiefs haven’t added a safety yet, but is a nice fifth round addition to a team looking for secondary help. He’s a little bit smaller than corners typically are, but he has the athleticism that teams are looking for.
"While White is just a shade smaller and slower than teams usually like outside, he makes up for it with his instincts, athleticism and cover skills. White is relatively clean in coverage and is able to stick to his targets, but may not take enough chances to become a ball hawk who takes the ball away. White’s ball skills and feel for the position could put him in position for early snaps as a third corner and he has eventual starter potential. – Per Lance Zierlein of NFL.com"
While the Chiefs could have used a safety or maybe another guy along the offensive line, it’s nice to see them really zoning in on an area of need. Yes, cornerback appears to have its two main starters, but losing Sean Smith hurts this team a lot, and they need to be able to make up for it in the draft.
