The KC Chiefs finally didn’t trade down and took a cornerback in the third-round of the 2016 NFL draft.

The KC Chiefs took a risk on a cornerback who broke his fibula at the end of the 2015 season when they took KeiVarae Russell in the third-round of the 2016 NFL draft.

Russell comes from Notre Dame where he was a starter even as a true freshman. He’s got good numbers in his career, but hasn’t played much in the past couple of years for a number of reasons.

He missed the 2014 season due to ‘academic dishonesty’, or cheating in other words. But hey, if you aren’t cheating, you aren’t trying (or so I’ve been told).

He then broke his fibula at the end of the 2015 season so there were some health concerns that came with this pick. He was healthy enough to enjoy a fine Pro-Day where he put up some impressive numbers:

Pro Day Results:

"40-yard dash: 4.44 secondsShort shuttle: 4.09 seconds 3-cone: 6.89 seconds Vertical: 38 1/2 inches Broad jump: 11 feet, 2 inches"

Here’s what NFL. com has to say about the cornerback that played his college career for the Fighting Irish:

"Smart, experienced cornerback has strapped it on against some of the best receivers in the nation during his time with the Irish. Russell has the athleticism and cover talent to play press coverage and make a living there, but he may never produce as many pass breakups or interceptions as a team would like. Played outside and from the slot and offers that versatility to an NFL team as a future starter or third corner."

This pick helps fill a definite need for the KC Chiefs. Sean Smith departed via free agency and the Chiefs have a question mark at the cornerback position opposite Marcus Peters.

With Marcus Peters proving that throwing the ball in his general direction was a bad idea last season, the Chiefs are smart to pick up a player that provides options at the position.

They also have Phillip Gaines coming back and Steven Nelson didn’t play terribly in limited time last season.

The KC Chiefs are going to have a very young and inexperienced secondary in 2016, so hopefully the defensive front puts enough pressure on the quarterback that they don’t get torched.

The Chiefs have probably been smart in trading back to get their picks to save money and gain picks to help make up for the loss of the third-round pick that they lost. Looks like they found a way to get that pick after all (Take that Roger!).
