The KC Chiefs traded the 28th overall pick in the 2016 NFL Draft to the San Francisco 49ers.

The Kansas City Chiefs held the 28th overall pick in this year’s draft and really could have gone in any direction with that particular pick. Rather than use the pick, however, the Chiefs traded with the San Francisco 49ers and are now out of the first round all together.

The 49ers used that pick to select Joshua Garnett out of Stanford, who is an offensive guard. The Niners trading up to get a guard is a little odd, but hey, that was their call.

The Chiefs, on the other hand, now have two picks in the second round and it looks pretty smart honestly, as there really weren’t a ton of “great options” left on the board at that point. The Broncos had traded up to pick 26 to get Paxton Lynch, which honestly could have been who the Chiefs were after.

The Chiefs now receive the 37th overall pick, a fourth round pick, and a sixth round pick to go along with their six other selections. Kansas City was smart to make this move, as they were stripped of their third round selection due to tampering violations in the free agency talks with Jeremy Maclin a year ago.

With no one great on the board at pick 28, the KC Chiefs were wise to trade this pick. The best player available was Myles Jack, who is injured and could have to have surgery and therefore be a risky selection for any team.

This was also a smart pick because it will save the team money. There’s a big difference from what first round players get as opposed to second and later round players receive. Smart financial decision by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Now the Chiefs will get a few extra draft selections and don’t have to worry about taking someone that they don’t feel a huge connection to. This is a team that loves its draft picks and the more they have, the better the team John Dorsey and Andy Reid can build.

While Kansas City won’t be drafting in the first round, they now have two picks in the second round tomorrow evening and an extra fourth rounder, giving them two in that round as well.

Hopefully, the Kansas City Chiefs can use this trade to their advantage and draft some great young players to help build this team into a Super Bowl contender.

What did you think of the KC Chiefs trade with the 49ers and who do you hope they call to the podium tomorrow?
