Today’s KC Royals news is focused on Omar Infante and his usually sure glove at second base. Last night that wasn’t the case.

The Royals haven’t looked like themselves in the first two games of a three-game set against the Angels.

Things started off poorly for Ian Kennedy when he grazed Yunel Escobar to put him on base and then you could almost sense it was going to be ‘one of those nights’ when Rafael Ortega got a swinging bunt that refused to go fair.

The Royals were held to just four hits in that first game and looked listless at the plate. They haven’t hit their stride yet, that’s for sure.

As I write this, the Royals trail by four runs heading into the bottom of the sixth inning. Edinson Volquez got blown up but it wasn’t necessarily all on hard hit balls.

This game started off a lot like the first one. Escobar got sawed off but fought the pitch off for a single into right field. Ortega followed suit with a single to the left side (this one was struck a little better).

In the second inning, the bases loaded on a ball that Escobar hit so poorly it wound up bouncing off the plate so high that the Royals had no play. Ortega rolled a slow ball towards first for the first run and Trout finally got a hit with runners in scoring position.

Things really took a turn for the worse when Omar Infante made not one but two misplays at second base. While his bat has been questionable for the Royals, the one thing he’s done well is field his position.

The second misplay proved costly for the Royals. What would have been a double play to end the inning, allowed the bases to be loaded. Both were scored hits but he’s made harder plays look easier.

Two batters later, Johnny Giavotella hit a three run shot to give the Angels a four-run lead . He made sure he let the Royals hear him as he rounded the bases also in what must have been either a World Series winning shot or his first career home run (kidding)

It looked like the Royals were actually going to get something going with their offense. Mike Moustakas hit another home run and continues his quest for the Royals’ record (He’s got a long way to go).

The Royals looked like they had Jered Weaver right where they wanted him. The volatile pitcher for the Angels threw a fit and carried on and eventually convinced the baseball gods to help his cause. (again, kidding)

The bottom line is this: The KC Royals need to figure out how to hit with runners in scoring position. Lorenzo Cain needs to figure things out.

It looked like he might have taken a step in the right direction with a hard hit ball in his first at-bat and a good at-bat in his second. We’ll see how things progress there.

Last night was an anomaly on the defensive side of the ball. Not all of those bloop hits are going to fall, unless your name is Joakim Soria. The defense will be just fine.

The White Sox are no joke this year and are starting off the season red-hot. The Royals don’t want to have to play catch up all season long if they hope to return to the postseason for a third straight season.

Well what do you think KC Royals? Is it time for a new second baseman? What kind of funky voodoo is going on in California this season? When will Cain figure things out? Let me know your thoughts in the comments’ section below.
