Kansas City Chiefs Scouting Report: Shon Coleman
The offensive line has been a troubling area for the Kansas City Chiefs over the past few seasons. Will Kansas City decide to beef up the line by drafting Shon Coleman?
Any diehard fan of the KC Chiefs has experienced the lack of a strong offensive line over the past two seasons. Quarterback Alex Smith has hardly had time to make a good throw due to having to run for his life.
The offensive line looked a little bit better last season and started to gel a bit, but there is still room for improvement. Could the improvement mentioned be in the form of a rookie? If so, could it be Shon Coleman out of Auburn?
Coleman is an inspiration to Auburn and to the rest of anyone who followed college football. He was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in 2010. He underwent 30 months of chemo and was declared cancer free in 2014 (all of this according to CBS Sports).

Coleman then went on to be an absolute beast along the offensive line at Auburn and spent most of his time at left tackle. The Chiefs don’t necessarily need a left tackle in 2016, as Eric Fisher is the starting left tackle. Fisher, however, is entering the final year of his contract and while it’d be tough to imagine the Chiefs wanting to replace the former first overall pick, you never know.
Shon Coleman could not work out at the Combine or at Auburn’s Pro Day due to a knee injury. He was able to bench press 22 reps at the Combine though.

Coleman is not easily moved by defenses. He’s over 300 pounds and stands at 6’5″, making him a strong force along the line and a great protector for Smith’s blindside.
"“I spoke with a scout who was complaining about Coleman not being able to move that well. I have no idea what he’s looking at. He is a little stiff in space, but we aren’t drafting tackles based on second-level blocking and Coleman has good movement when he’s kicking out the edge in pass protection.” — AFC offensive line coach (via the “Sources Tell Us” section on NFL.com’s Draft Tracker)"
NFL.com also mentions that Coleman got away with several holding calls while in college, which won’t fly often in the pros. Coleman is also knocked for not moving his feet once he’s trying to block someone and for not being great against the inside move.
