Kansas City was recently ranked the fourth best city in terms of culture by Travel and Leisure. There is a lot to offer for all ages.

Forget for a moment, if you can, that the Chiefs won their first playoff game in 20 years last season. Also try and forget about the fact that the Kansas City Royals are defending World Champions and are off to an 8-2 start on the season.

Kansas City was already known as a good sports town and it’s always been known for it’s barbecue, but now it’s getting some recognition for the culture that it offers.

Katrina Hunt Brown, of Travel and Leisure, writes the following about Kansas City as she ranks it the fourth best city in terms of culture:

"As the No. 1 city for affordability, Kansas City offers serious bang for your cultural buck. Its three main museums—The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art (home to one of the few Caravaggios in the United States), the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art—all boast free admission. KC also scored in the top 5 for concerts, which could include the Lyric Opera at the iconic Kauffman Center, or sets at the Blue Room, the venue inside the American Jazz Museum. And while Kansas City won the survey for barbecue, it also made the top five for its interesting chef-driven cuisine—like the Crosstown District’s Grünauer, helmed by Viennese chef Peter Grünauer, which offers a Germanic Sunday brunch, or frühschoppen."

Only New York City, Houston, and Providence, Rhode Island beat out Kansas City as more cultured cities. It’s nice that Kansas City earned the distinction as the most affordable.

The Nelson-Atkins Museum is full of things to see and do both indoors and out. It may be best known for the giant birdie-like sculptures that sit outside the museum. Not only do they have special events that can all be found on their website, the museum offers free admission.

If more recent art, or contemporary art, is your thing then the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art or the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art are for you. They feature new exhibits all the time that feature are that has been created relatively recently. They too, are free.

Westport and Crown Center are a couple other great locales dripping with culture. There are a variety of activities for people of all ages. The big farmer’s markets in both the City Market and River Market bring ‘farm to table’ and offer a different dining alternative for families.

Don’t forget about the fountains that appear on nearly every street corner. Kansas City is sometimes known as the ‘City of Fountains’. Lately, the fountains have been blue for obvious reasons.

Kansas City really has a lot going on for them these days. It’s nice to know that someday soon I’ll be able to call Kansas City home…again.
