KC Royals: Who Did It Better Speed Edition
By Scott Dillon
The KC Royals walked away with a win yesterday on Terrance Gore’s walk-off head first slide. It begs the question, who did it better? The choice is yours.
The KC Royals have had some pretty exciting baseball in their last few games. They’ve already had two come from behind wins this season and now have ten come from behind wins in their last 15 wins dating back to last season.
Terrance Gore blazed on the base paths yesterday as he first went first to third on an error and then dove into home to win the game on a wild pitch. While many, myself included, didn’t understand Ned Yost‘s decision to keep Gore over Merrifield, he made it painstakingly obvious yesterday. Well played Ned.
The Royals have done some serious damage to opposing teams on the scoreboard and in the morale department by diving in to home plate with a head first slide. Let’s not forget about Eric Hosmer‘s mad dash in game five of the World Series to tie things up:

While Eric Hosmer’s slide is one that will always be remembered and celebrated by Royals’ fans, it wasn’t a slide of the walk-off variety. This one is going to come down to two slides into home that won the game for the Royals and came on the legs of some very fast individuals.
Both of these plays are very different, but they actually have a lot in common. Both of them feature Lorenzo Cain at the plate. Both of them saw the Royals tie the game in the ninth inning and win on a walk-off head first slide in the tenth. Both saw the Royals the victors by a score of 4-3. So who did it better?
The first one comes on a Lorenzo Cain hit into the ‘Lo-Cain Triangle’. The Royals hadn’t yet clinched the division yet when they were on a home stand against the Seattle Mariners. Paulo Orlando came all the way from second base and didn’t even break for third on contact. His wheels and slide that nearly saw his ankles go over his head helped the Royals cut their ‘magic number’ to two.
Gore’s slide probably needs less introduction, but let’s discuss it anyways.

Seeing the Royals come from behind late twice in the first five games helps prove that they still aren’t satisfied. There were questions heading into this season as to whether or not the Royals would be experiencing a hangover of sorts after winning the World Series. It only took one look at Salvador Perez after hitting his game tying triple to realize that isn’t the case.
Yesterday’s come from behind win was very reminiscent of the game five comeback against Matt Harvey and the Mets. With Lorenzo Cain on base and the Royals down by two, Eric Hosmer laced a ball into the left field corner that fell in for a triple. He would cross the plate to tie the game on Kendrys Morales‘ sacrifice fly which was much less dramatic than the game five play to tie things up.
Christian Colon, another game five hero, drew a lead-off walk in the tenth inning to be replaced by Gore on the base paths. He made it to third on a pick-off attempt error and then he showed everyone how fast he really is.
Both of these plays helped the Royals win a baseball game and both were exciting. Trevor May slamming his fist into the ground and yelling into his glove embodies what every team probably feels after trying to secure a win against the Royals and failing to do so. They’re frustratingly good at completing these comebacks.
