KC Chiefs Best Fourth Round Picks of All-Time | Number 3: Jack Rudnay

Herkenhoff may have been a great remix, but Jack Rudnay was the original long-term foundation on the offensive line before Herkenhoff’s tenure.

Rudnay was drafted in 1969, before the merger of the American and National Football Leagues.

The 1969 Draft was one of three combined drafts that took place among both AFL and NFL teams from 1967-1969.

  • Unfortunately for Rudnay sustained back injuries during that year’s College All-Star Game.

This barbaric ritual where last year’s NFL champions played a team of college seniors forced Rudnay to miss the KC Chiefs third and final AFL Championship season.

Rudnay started eight games in his first season with the KC Chiefs, and would go on to amass 171 starts over the course of his 13 seasons as center for the KC Chiefs.

From 1973-1976, Rudnay took part in a much more humane All-Star game when he was named to four straight Pro Bowl teams.

1976 is also the year the last College All-Star Game was played, but, luckily, the powers that be would find other more subtle ways to exploit college athletes.

Rudnay retired in 1982, and 12 years later in 1994, Rudnay was named to the Kansas City Chiefs Hall of Fame.

Rudnay may not have played a high profile position, but this Hall of Fame honor signifies homage paid to a great unsung hero.
