The Kansas City Chiefs need help in the secondary this season. Could Kendall Fuller be an option in the early rounds of the 2016 NFL Draft?

This past offseason saw several KC Chiefs depart for other teams (or in Husain Abdullah‘s case – retirement). The biggest loss for Kansas City was Sean Smith heading for AFC West rival Oakland. Smith was the team’s best cornerback during his time in Chiefs Kingdom, and it’ll be difficult to replace him.

The Chiefs could decide to draft a cornerback early on this year, much like they have the past two years, and Kendall Fuller could be on their big board of cornerback prospects.

Fuller, a three-year starter at Virginia Tech, had 119 tackles for the Hokies. He also had 25 defended passes, eight interceptions, three and a half sacks, and forced two fumbles (recovering both). Fuller comes from a family of Virginia Tech football players, as his three older brothers all played there at some point (Kyle Fuller of the Chicago Bears is one of his brothers).

  • Bench press – 15 reps

Fuller only did the bench press part of the Combine due to a knee injury he sustained last season, according to Gil Brandt of NFL.com.

The biggest knock on Kendall Fuller right now is that he’s currently recovering from knee surgery. He only played in three games last season, but many seem to think that Fuller is talented enough and is worth an early round selection.

More from KC Kingdom

The Kansas City Chiefs very well could target Fuller in the second round. He’s certainly got the chops for the position and he showed that in college. CBS Sports notes that Fuller has receiver-like skills in the secondary, as he had 35 defended passes and eight interceptions in his 28 starts. This is the type of defensive player that the Chiefs need.

Right now, the Chiefs will likely roll with last year’s first round pick Marcus Peters and 2014’s third round pick Phillip Gaines. Gaines only played in three games last year (he tore his ACL in week three), but he seemed decent in his first season and before he got injured.

The KC Chiefs also recently signed Stevie Brown and Jimmy Wilson, both of whom could make an impact on the roster.

Despite these two signings, don’t be shocked if the Chiefs go after a cornerback early. If they decide to, Kendall Fuller could be worth the risk for sure.
