Round 6 – Pick 28: Justin Simmons, Safety (Boston College)

The Kansas City Chiefs address a position of need with this pick. They take a safety to try and help replace the departures of Husain Abdullah and Tyvon Branch.

They have done some things this off-season to try and help fill the holes left by those departures. Jimmy Wilson and Stevie Brown were both brought in to try and step into a starting safety role.

While those players could make an impact, it’s a good idea to create as much internal competition for the spot as possible. Justin Simmons could fill that void and help create options for the Chiefs’ secondary.

More from Chiefs Draft Analysis

"Simmons has interceptions against Deshaun Watson, Jacoby Brissett and two against Notre Dame, and was one of the standouts at Shrine Game practices showing off his instincts and ball skills. Despite his thin frame, Simmons tackles with urgency and doesn’t lack toughness for the position. With range, length, cover skills and special teams ability Simmons should hear his name called on the third day of the draft and could become an eventual starter."

The Chiefs have one of the best safeties in the game in Eric Berry, but he can’t fill both safety positions by himself. Justin Simmons would provide depth at least initially, and learning behind one of the best could make him a viable starter for a few seasons.
