Wide receiver has been an area of concern for the Kansas City Chiefs over the past few seasons. Could they look to fill that need by selecting Tyler Boyd in the 2016 NFL Draft?

It’s no secret that the Kansas City Chiefs have been trying to find a solid group of wide receivers for the past several seasons. They signed Jeremy Maclin last offseason, which helped a lot, but now the attention shifts to that number two spot on the roster.

Chris Conley and Albert Wilson made strides in 2015, but neither are quite starter material yet. Should the Chiefs consider drafting Tyler Boyd out of Pittsburgh to possibly fill that second wide receiver spot?

In three seasons at Pittsburgh, Boyd had 254 receptions for 3,361 yards and 21 touchdowns. All three seasons were good for Boyd, as he had over 1,000 yards receiving in 2013 and 2014, and barely missed the cut last year with 926.

Boyd started all three seasons with the Panthers and had a different quarterback each year, which really speaks to his talent level and what he’s capable of. He is Pittsburgh’s record holder in receptions and in receiving yards.

Some knocks on Tyler Boyd are that he’s undersized for an NFL wide receiver and that he isn’t really a downfield threat. The downfield threat part might actually work for the KC Chiefs, as Alex Smith likes to throw a lot of screen passes, and that seems to be Boyd’s forte.

The Chiefs need another wide receiver despite having Wilson and Conley, and signing Rod Streater this offseason. Tyler Boyd is by no means a first round pick, but he could be a good selection in round two. He’d fill a position of need and could be used quite effectively in this Chiefs offense.

"Pittsburgh asked Boyd to be a running back and possession receiver this season, but that doesn’t define what he can be in the pros. Boyd makes up for a lack of speed with vice grips for hands and being intelligent in his routes. Boyd isn’t a standalone WR1, but he can be a very productive starter in a play-action attack that allows him to play to his strengths. – NFL.com’s bottom line on Tyler Boyd"

The Chiefs have options in this draft, and with Maclin at the number one spot on the receiver depth chart, the need for a wide receiver isn’t prominent. That’s why Tyler Boyd could end up being the perfect selection in round two.
