Today’s KC Royals news focuses on the newly announced starting pitchers and bullpen.

In just six days, the KC Royals will face off against the Mets in the opener. Ned Yost has announced that Edinson Volquez will be the starter for the Royals that night, and will face off against Mets pitcher Matt Harvey.

After Volquez, the Royals starting pitchers will be Ian Kennedy, Yordano Ventura, Chris Young, and Kris Medlen.

The Royals bullpen will feature Brian Duensing, Chien-Ming Wang, Dillon Gee, Danny Duffy, Luke Hochevar, Kelvin Herrera, and Joakim Soria with Wade Davis as closer.

It was reported that Ventura may have been pushed back in the rotation due to recently contracting the flu.

Reports also indicated that Medlen will likely be skipped in the rotation the first time through, in an attempt to build up his stamina, one can only assume.

Surprisingly, Medlen will be starting when the KC Royals face off against the Mariners in the second game of their split squad today, and Volquez will start in the first against the Padres.

The Royals are coming off a loss to the A’s Sunday where Young was charged with eight runs, but only five of them were earned runs.

This rough day for Young certainly won’t make John Viril feel better about his status as fourth starting pitcher in the rotation, but the good news is that it’s still spring training.

The KC Royals pitching looks to be quite formidable this year. Duffy being featured in the bullpen is an interesting move that projects to pay off for the Royals.

After today’s games, the Royals will face off against the Giants on Tuesday, Rangers on Wednesday, and finish off spring training with a Friday and Saturday game against the Diamondbacks.
