KC Chiefs News: Alex Smith and Tampering Punishment

KC Chiefs news is mainly about the team appealing the loss of their third round draft pick in the 2016 NFL Draft.

The Kansas City Chiefs might have gotten Jeremy Maclin in free agency last offseason, but now they’re being punished for tampering with the free agency system. As a result, the Chiefs lost a third round pick in this year’s draft and a sixth-round pick in next year’s draft.

Both are a huge blow, but the third round pick is especially harsh. The third round is where the Chiefs have done the best when it comes to drafting key players, getting guys like Jamaal Charles (2008), Justin Houston (2010), and Travis Kelce (2013). Losing that pick sucks… A lot.

On the flip side, there is a lot to like about the 2016 KC Chiefs squad. One such likable aspect is quarterback Alex Smith, who had his best NFL season in 2015, and continues to look more and more like the guy the Chiefs traded for back in 2013.

Smith has been an above average quarterback for Kansas City, but is he the answer under center? Some fans would say no due to his lack of deep passes, but others (myself included) feel like he’s just fine. He doesn’t always win the team games, but he never loses games, and that part is huge.

Smith led the team to a playoff win for the first time in over two decades and now has that momentum to build on heading into this season. He showed he can be a fierce leader last season, and it’s time for him to continue that attitude and lead this Chiefs team to greatness.

Sure, the tampering situation isn’t great, but hopefully the Chiefs will get their third round pick back. It would really help this team moving forward and would help add talent to a squad that is looking to win the AFC West for the first time in six years.

Alex Smith will be the guy leading the charge for that coveted division title, and he’ll do so as his fourth season as the starting quarterback for the Kansas City Chiefs.
