The Kansas City Chiefs are known for having one of the best defenses in the NFL. Could they add to that by drafting Leonard Floyd in the 2016 NFL Draft?

The KC Chiefs hold the 28th overall pick in this year’s draft. Now that the team has retained a large portion of their free agents, the Chiefs should have a better idea of what they’re looking for with their first round pick.

Could outside linebacker still be on the radar for the Chiefs? If so, Leonard Floyd is one of the best ones available this season.

More than likely, the Chiefs won’t target a linebacker early in the draft. At least not in the first round, but for the sake of the scouting report, let’s take a deeper look at what Floyd has to offer.

Floyd, a junior out of Georgia, would add to the elusive linebacker core that the Chiefs have gotten out of Athens (Justin Houston, Ramik Wilson to name a few). The KC Chiefs seem to love drafting players out of Georgia, as they also have Aaron Murray and Chris Conley on the roster as well.

Floyd, however, will likely be off the board by the time the Chiefs go to pick. He had a monster combine, showing off his speed and skills.

Even if he does fall to pick 28, the Chiefs recently re-signed Tamba Hali to a three-year deal and gave Justin Houston a huge contract last offseason. That probably means the team isn’t going to spend their first round pick on yet another outside linebacker, but hey… John Dorsey has shown that he likes to do the unexpected when it comes to first round picks.

Given that Dee Ford hasn’t panned out like the organization was hoping, the team will likely continue to roll with Houston and Hali for the time being. They have Ramik Wilson on the roster and yes, they do have Ford as extra depth.

Floyd is a great pass rusher, but he doesn’t have the preferred size that NFL linebackers should have (he weighs in at 244 pounds, according to CBS Sports’ draft profile). That being said, he totaled 17 sacks in three years at Georgia and had 182 tackles.

Next: Who do the Chiefs take in the most recent mock draft?

With the Chiefs not likely looking to add yet another linebacker to their roster, don’t expect Leonard Floyd’s name to be called by Kansas City on draft day.
