Today’s KC Chiefs news is focused on the window of opportunity for the Chiefs to win a Super Bowl. Is it finally time?

The KC Chiefs made a lot of big moves this week to keep some of their key players in house. They may finally have a shot at the division this season depending on what the rest of free agency decides.

The Denver Broncos went for broke by bringing in big contracts and some big players. What resulted was the ultimate prize. If you’re going to gamble on a winner, it’s always best to see it through.

While it will probably hurt the Broncos to lose some of those players they’ve lost, it would be even more bitter had that last game resulted in a loss. Window’s of opportunity open and close very quickly, and the Chiefs may have found a small opening.

They brought back aging players Tamba Hali and Derrick Johnson on mostly team friendly deals. Both will now likely retire as Chiefs, but they’ll be entering the twilight of their careers soon enough. They ate through a lot of cap space in retaining some key players and in bringing in Mitchell Schwartz.

"Look, I love DJ and Hali. They’re Chiefs legends. They’re fantastic guys. Enough good things can’t be said about either one of them, but this is a business. The Chiefs are legit contenders to make it to the Super Bowl this year, and Sean Smith being in Kansas City would have made that statement seem like a little more real."

Ben Grubbs being cut is especially painful. Not only was he mostly unproductive last year, but his effect on the team this season could hurt without him ever being present.

A lot has been said about the Chiefs’ clock management, but their salary cap management could hurt also. Ben Grubbs is going to count against the Chiefs’ cap space to the tune of $5.2 million this season without ever playing a snap.

Their dead cap hits are much better this year than they were in 2015, so perhaps the clock management can also improve this season. It was especially scrutinized in the Divisional Round loss to the Patriots this past season, and could be a focal point this off-season.

With all of the positives surrounding the Chiefs right now, there is some bad news also. They will be without their third-round pick this season due to a free agent tampering violation. While it may seem like the Broncos have been fleeced, don’t be fooled. They’re secondary is still very much intact, and that defensive line is going to be as imposing as ever. They won it all with poor quarterback play last season, don’t underestimate their ability.
