The Kansas City Royals have become a completely different team in the past few years, and it’s refreshing to see.

Remember the hard times of being a Royals fan? Sure you do, we all do. It wasn’t that long ago.

It wasn’t long ago that this team lost 100 games three consecutive seasons. It wasn’t long ago when this team couldn’t keep star players due to lack of money and no other talent.

Those days appear to be behind us, however, as the Kansas City Royals are becoming a team that none of us expected.

For one, they’ve had three straight winning seasons and been to two straight World Series. They also won their first World Series title in three decades. So much different than just a few years ago.

They’re no longer the team that no one wants to claim. They’re no longer the team that no players want to play for. They’re no longer the losers of Major League Baseball.

Second, the Royals are re-signing their star players, something they never could do before.

In January, the KC Royals re-signed Alex Gordon to a five-year deal worth $72 million. Gordon has been beloved by Kansas City since being the team’s second overall pick in 2005.

All throughout the 2015 season, it seemed apparent that Gordon would be departing and looking for greener pastures. When the Royals did re-sign him to the biggest contract in franchise history, fans were stoked. Gordon is the heart and soul of the Royals team, and it was a move that Dayton Moore really needed to make.

Not only did the team re-sign Gordon, they also recently signed Salvador Perez to a contract extension for five years, tying him to Kansas City through 2021. This is the type of situation that the Kansas City Royals rarely used to do.

It just shows how different things are for this team now that they’re World Series champions. Before these winning seasons occurred, this is a team that would have let these two guys walk due to not being able to afford them.

This is no longer that Royals team. They’re no longer the team that no one wants to claim. They’re no longer the team that no players want to play for. They’re no longer the losers of Major League Baseball.

No, these Kansas City Royals are competitors. Kansas City loves them, players want to come to Kansas City now, and they’re the reigning World Series champions. They’ve also won two straight American League pennants as well.

It’s been fun being a Royals fan these past few years, and now the team can afford to keep the star players and keep the fans happy. Having both Gordo and Salvy on the roster for the next five years should sit well with fans, as it means two of the team’s best leaders are sticking around in Kansas City.
